catherine the great is the solo project of Catherine Backus (the skipperdees, After Jack). While the project primarily exists as a repository for her feelings, her sad songs have drawn numerous accolades, including 1st place at the Merlefest Chris Austin Songwriting Contest and 4th place at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival Songwriter Showcase. Over the course of her career, she's shared stages with folks like Molly Tuttle, Kim Richey, Willie Watson, and Ben Sollee. She doesn't gig too much these days, focusing instead on her work as a board-certified Music Therapist and sharing songs in smaller spaces. She would love to see a picture of your dog.

Eli Conley is an indie folk/country singer-songwriter and activist raised in Richmond and Hanover County, based now in Sacramento, CA. He is delighted to be returning to Virginia on his summer tour!
Eli makes music for queer and trans folks, justice seekers, and anyone who doesn’t fit in a box. He’ll be joined for this show by frequent collaborator Joel Price (Open Hand, ellipsis) on mandolin, violin, and backing vocals.
Eli's voice is tender and heartfelt, with melodies that can leave you teary-eyed yet hopeful. As a gay transgender man, his songs tell stories that aren’t always reflected in roots music. Eli founded Queer Country West Coast, a regular series featuring LGBTQ+ blues, folk, and country artists in California. He has opened for Carsie Blanton, Heather Mae, and Grammy-winner Kimya Dawson, and been featured in Newsweek, the Huffington Post, The Advocate, and NPR’s All Things Considered.
Themes of uncertainty, ache, and loss come up again and again on Eli’s recent record Searching for What's True, yet light always shines just behind the clouds. The songs are drawn from the concrete and immediate details of daily life: a stuffed animal clutched in a child's arms, a colorful sunset after a forest fire, a confederate statue toppling to the ground. The result is a testament to the power of the creative spirit. At times it's hushed and intimate, at others soaring and dramatic. At the heart of Searching for What's True is Eli's singular voice, urging us to stay open to our grief and our joy.
